plans just announced by some major political power players. anne. >> reporter: several moves were announced this morning. new proposals for a mix of stricter gun laws and new funding for protection of schools and a lot of those moves are coming from california politicians. >> we have failed our children over and over and over again. we have failed at the most basic task of keeping them safe. >> reporter: senator barbara boxer introduced two new bills today, the school safety enhancements acts would fund things like tip lines, surveillance equipment and secured entrances at schools, and federal agencies would work together to develop new school safety guidelines. the second bill would allow the federal government to reimburse governors who want to use national guard troops to help secure schools. >> we have to do more than talk because we've talked before. we've cried before. we've lamented before. so we have to act. >> reporter: president obama said this morning he is ready

to act. >> the fact that this problem is complex can no longer be an excuse for doing nothing. >> reporter: he is naming vice president joe biden to lead a new task force to offer concrete proposals to curb gun violence. >> this is a team that has a very specific task, to pull together real reforms right now. >> reporter: he wants the proposals no later than january and says he will then push legislation without delay and he says stricter gun laws alone are not the answer. there's also a push to examine mental health issues and the impact of violent entertainment like videogames. >> we must take action so that we can tell our children that we are doing everything in our power to prevent these tragedies from ever happening again. >> reporter: democratic leader nancy pelosi today named california congressman mike thompson to lead a task force to investigate new steps congress tan take right now. >> i have been a hunter all my life and there's no reason to

have a magazine that holds 30 shells. >> reporter: pelosi says he is ideally suited to lead the effort in a bipartisan weapon to ban assault weapons and assault magazines. >> reporter: some people will consider new legislation to regulate firearms but keep in mind, there have been 12 attempts to bring back the assault weapons ban since 2004 and all of them have failed. >> thank you. and for the third day in a row, the grieving town of newtown, connecticut has gathered to bury more victims of the sandy hook elementary shootings. five funerals today for two teachers and three children. the funerals for the victims are drawing in mourners from across the country. yesterday hundreds showed up to remember school principal dawn hochsprung who died trying to stop the shooter after he broke into the school last friday. the search for a motive behind the shootings is

difficult. investigators hope the computer and hard drive recovered at gunman's home would shed light on the reason for the massacre. but the 20-year-old adam lanza deliberately smashed his electronic devices into so many small pieces that the fbi lab is unable to retrieve any data. investigators will continue to search through lanza's cell phone and credit card records. two bay area gun buy-backs last weekend were so successful that one city needs more money to pay for it. people turned in about 600 firearms in oakland and san francisco expecting $200 catch for each one. the san francisco megaboys including had to hand out ious after handing back a12 weapons. >> i was ready to shut it down walk out and tell the crowd that's all we got, i'm sorry, maybe we'll do it another day but the chief suhr said oh, no, no. we have all these guns, we have to get them. >> the result is they gave out 157 notes promising money. that's $31,000 in ious due in

four days. but the chief of police now says he has found the money and is expected to announce who it's coming from later today. it's cold this morning. most people felt it and saw it. frost covered car windows there. drives in the north bay had to scrape off their -- drivers in the north bay had to scrape off their windshields. let's check with liz. >> like chicago around here! not quite. but we did have several freeze warnings in effect especially in the north bay. they have all expired by now about four hours ago but this is how cold we got this morning. 21st century in napa and petaluma, 25 in napa -- 20s in napa and petaluma, 25 in napa, breezing in concord, livermore 27. san jose 32. it was a little warmer in san francisco. but still hovering around 40 degrees. so we are slowly, very slowly, warming up all across the bay area. we are now in the 40s to seeing a few low 50s in fact.

we are seeing a growing population of hungry people. >> reporter: they already feed the needy every day. today's giveaway is about doing a little more. >> what we're doing today is giving them a little more than we do so they can take it home and cook it for the holidays. >> reporter: glide and its volunteers started giving out bags at 7:30 this morning but people were in line hours before. inside each bag were the fixings for a holiday meal and something extra to help put food on the table longer. >> it's touching to just be able to see that people are so appreciative to be able to get, you know, a great meal they can serve to their families and understanding how hard it is especially in these times. >> reporter: companies like gap, inc., helped fund the giveaway bringing with them dedicated volunteers like wayne riley who has taken part in the event for the past eight years. >> this time of year where you want to be able to give back to individuals. and being able to have the opportunity to do that warms my heart and it's the best christmas present i could ask. >> reporter: organizers just said they plan to give out

for mexican- american singer jenni ri th after her [ speaking spanish ] thousands of mourners gathered in los angeles this morning for a public memorial for singer jenni rivera. she died earlier this month after her learjet crashed in northern mexico. six others were also killed. a private burial will be held separately. fluoride is coming to south bay drinking water. the santa clara valley water district approved the plan to fund the project aimed at improving dental health. san jose is currently the largest city in the country without fluoride in its water. it will take two years to complete. in other health news, british researchers say the commonly prescribed antibiotic amoxicyllin doesn't work to treat coughs and bronchitis. a new study looked at more than 2,000 adults with respiratory infections. some received amoxicyllin, others a placebo. researchers say there was little difference in how severe or long the symptoms lasted between the two groups.

an aspirin a day over a long period of time may not be good for your eyesight. researchers at the university of wisconsin warned people who used aspirin regularly for at least 10 years are more likely to experience blindness later in life. scientists say the risk is small and that more research is needed. well, many parents give their children milk because it's loaded with vitamins that can keep the brain and bones healthy. but there could be a limit. cbs reporter tara mergener reports why too much milk is bad. >> reporter: the sherwood family gets plenty of milk with their meals. >> probably about two to three glasses a day. >> reporter: milk is a great source of vitamin d and calcium but a new study in the journal "pediatrics" finds too much may be a bad thing. researchers looked at more than 1300 children ages 2 to 5 and found two cups of milk a day is enough to maintain vitamin d levels. more than that can affect iron levels. >> excessive amounts of milk which was more like three to

four cups a day or more was associated with increased level of [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: getting enough iron is important for children because it plays a critical role in early brain development. low iron can also increase your risk for anemia. milk isn't the only way to get vitamin d. fatty fish like salmon is a good source. so is the sun. the study points out some children with dark skin may need supplements because their bodies don't make enough vitamin d when exposed to sunlight. >> a lot. >> reporter: melanie says she has no plans to limit milk in her house. >> what the doctor says is good is what i go by. >> reporter: and spending plenty of time outdoors also helps. tara mergener for cbs news, washington. instagram is backtracking on after announcing it could legally sell user photos without their permission. people were not happy about the big policy change since facebook bought the photo sharing site. the new policy was set to go

into effect next month. that was met with massive online backlash and user complaints. now instagram says it will not put users' photos in advertisements. well, the next important photograph is from "time" magazine. their person of the year, president barack obama, will appear on the cover. time made the announcement this morning first among the eight finalists were yahoo ceo marisa meyer and apple's tim cook. the last silicon valley person to win the top honor was mark zuckerberg back in 2010. bill and hillary clinton were also in the running. >> but the president made it. >> he did. all right. so we're talking about chilly weather. >> we got the dramatic weather music playing. yeah. >> something important must be going on. >> something very important. this is the temperatures. that's what we're talking about today. if you stepped outside you know it is super cold out there. it's because we have these clear blue skies barely a cloud in sight. so another cool day all throughout the afternoon. plenty of sunshine out there

though. chilly once again tonight. not quite as cold as what we saw this morning. so we're not expecting any freeze advisories to be in effect but wet weather that's returning. that's a big story, as well. that's not until later in the week. we'll get to that in just a minute. in the meantime this is what we got going on with this weak high pressure. but we are watching a low as well coming from the gulf of alaska and it's going to bring us a chance of rain it looks like possibly in the afternoon in the north bay and then pretty much all across the bay area by thursday evening. pretty breezy conditions associated with that system, as well. so let's time it out with futurecast. as you can see today, a whole lot of nothing. pretty clear skies. and then overnight and into tomorrow, we'll pause it thursday 7:00, where we start to see things get unsettled. all that green and yellow is going to move farther south. overnight and friday morning, looks like the commute could be a wet one. so just prepare for that. friday around 7:00 things are going to get dicey around the

bay area. so for today, once again we're remaining dry. it's just these cold temperatures. that's what we got going on a lot of 50s so kind of similar actually to what we saw yesterday. low to mid-50s. it's not going to really budge much beyond that and then your overnight lows, for the most part going to stay above freezing. so it will be cold but not quite as cold as what we saw overnight last night. 36 in concord. 33 in livermore. so definitely getting chilly in some of the east bay valleys. 39 in san rafael and san francisco going to see a low overnight of about 47 degrees. here's your forecast over the next several days. wednesday, cold and then thursday evening that's weather we start to get wet and then look at that things remain unsettled throughout the weekend before we finally dry out it looks like christmas eve and christmas day for the most part staying in the 50s. so if you are heading out of town doing any skiing for the holiday weekend let's see, we got some pretty good skiing conditions. more new snow at heavenly. they got one inch in the last

that what you're looking at is a tricky operation. this is a new escalator going to the top of the one world trade center in new york. the escalator is headed for the 101st floor. crews started hoist the parts of the spire that go on the very top of the building to make one world trade center the tallest building in the western hemisphere. work is scheduled to be finished in two years. there were too many players on the field last night but one of them was not human. a pidgeon raided the oakland coliseum during the raiders/chiefs game. it stayed on the field for seven minutes during the 2nd quarter despite attempts to get it to leave. it took a groundskeeper with a bucket to get the bird out of the game. the raiders won 15-0. but still that little bird could have got smushed. >> love the application of the telestrator, just oblivious to everything. the most controversial video of the day something we
